London Spy begins as the story of a chance romance between two young men from very different worlds, one (it turns out) from the Secret Intelligence Service, the other from a world of clubbing and youthful excess. Danny (Ben Whishaw) – gregarious, hedonistic, and romantic – falls in love with the asocial, enigmatic, brilliant Alex (Edward Holcroft). But just as they realize they are perfect for each other, Alex disappears. Danny mysteriously is given the key to Alex's apartment, where he discovers Alex's dead body. Alex was found in a room which appears to be dedicated to sado-masochism. He telephones the police, but when he drops the phone he makes a connection with what Alex had said, from this he discovers a hidden, unknown device, which he hides by swallowing it. Danny is informed that Alex is an alias, he was not an orphan as he claimed, and that he worked for the Intelligence Service
The series was commissioned by Janice Hadlow and Polly Hill,[3] and produced by Guy Heeley for Working Title Television.[4] The executive producers are Juliette Howell, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Polly Hill.[5] Filming began in 2014.[6] The first episode was screened on BBC2 on 9 November 2015.
