COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA — Video of a school resource officer arresting a female 12th grade student has gone viral atop a wave of outrage as the shocking footage makes its way around the world. The girl's offense? Not talking in class, and not standing up when ordered to do so.
Deputy Ben Fields, a bodybuilder and part time football coach, was a school resource officer at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, at least until Monday evening.
The senior deputy has been put on unpaid leave while the school and Richland County Sheriff's Office investigate the arrest. The sheriff has also asked the FBI to investigate the incident.
Spring Valley student Aaron Johnson, who witnessed the arrest, described the girl as new to the school, and quiet. He said the other students in the room were terrified into remaining passive.
One exception was 18-year-old Niya Kenny, who stood up and protested the officer's treatment of the girl. For that, she too was arrested and charged with disturbing school, she told WLTX19 news.
Several Black Parents Associations in the Richland Two school district have also voiced their outrage at deputy Field's behavior.
