Parasitic twin: 4 year old boy in India discovered to be carrying dead twin

WEST BENGAL INDIA — A boy in India complaining of a stomach ache was found to be carrying a dead fetus in his torso. What doctors initially thought was a tumor turned out to be a nearly fully formed baby.

The boy, whose family is from West Bengal, was admitted to hospital after complaining about severe stomach pains. After a long surgery, doctors removed a dead fetus with hands, legs, fingernails, and a partially formed head from the 4 year old boy’s abdomen.

The boy was afflicted with a rare condition called fetus in fetu, literally meaning “baby within a baby”. During pregnancy with twins, one of the fetuses can end up being absorbed into the other baby via the umbilical cord. The absorbed twin becomes a parasite, and while it usually does not survive outside the womb, it can still pose a major threat to the surviving baby.

The boy in India is currently stable but still under observation for possible complications.
