EMERSON, GEORGIA — A traffic stop caught on police dashcam in Emerson, Georgia turned deadly when the officer fired more than a dozen shots at the armed suspect on the morning of October 14, WSBTV reported.

The driver, Brent Andrew Brannon, 27, was pulled over for a tag violation, but when Officer Robert K. Smith, 24, found out that Brannon had arrest warrants for trafficking heroin and marijuana and having a sawed off shotgun, things heated up.

Dashcam footage released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation shows Smith telling Brannon that he has warrants for his arrest and asking him to get out of the vehicle. That's when things took a turn for the worse. Smith called for backup and fired his Taser at Brannon, but it didn't work and Brannon pulled out a gun on the officer, WSBTV reported. Smith fired more than a dozen rounds into the vehicle. Brannon can be heard groaning as Smith calls for an ambulance and tells Brannon to drop his weapon.

According to his obituary, Brannon, who was a veteran of the U.S. Army and spent four years serving in Afghanistan, died at the Cartersville Medical Center following the shooting. Smith was put on leave while the GBI investigates the incident. Smith has been on the force for just under two years, and doesn't have any prior investigations or sanctions, NBC Atlanta reported.
