South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier explains decision to resign

True to form, Steve Spurrier matter-of-factly announced his resignation Tuesday - not retirement - as South Carolina's football coach and said he was looking forward to the next chapter of his life.
"The last several years I always get asked how much longer are you going to coach," Spurrier said in a news conference at Williams-Brice Stadium.
"My answer is always the same.
As long as we keep winning, everybody's happy we're ranked, I guess I can go several more years.
But if it starts going south, it starts going bad, I need to get out.
You can't keep a coach who's done it as long as I have when it goes the wrong direction."
Spurrier, 70, made it clear that South Carolina's performance this season and downward trend that began last season was the reason he felt the need to step aside.
