Palestinian unrest 'does not look to be organised'

Dennis Ross is a former US envoy to the Middle East. He claims the current flare-up in Israel and the Palestinian territories is not a planned operation but warns that it could morph into a third intifada if quick appeasement steps are not taken by each side. He claims that Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas is not supporting the violence but instead trying to ensure that it does not get out of control.
Ross told FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman he believes it is "too soon to say" whether the current unrest in Israel and the Palestinian territories can be called a third intifada.
"The first two intifadas had a very clear organisation", he explained. "What you see happening right now does not look to be organised. Increasingly, it looks like it’s individuals, particularly all these stabbings... There’s a climate that obviously creates an impulse and is giving momentum to this. The question is whether or not you will see some structure to it".
"Before, in the second intifada, the Palestinian Authority was contributing to it. Today, the Palestinian Authority is not contributing to it", Ross pointed out.
"At this point I don’t know that we can describe it as a third intifada but we certainly can’t dismiss the possibility either", he concluded.
