How much fun can a 2-tonne SUV be on the track? The answer might surprise you. We head to Killarney Raceway for a full track test of the new BMW X5 M.
Following the launch of the new BMW X5 and X6, the company has released the new M versions of what it calls its sports activity vehicle and sports activity coupe. As before, the similarities between the two vehicles outweigh the few differences.
Both have the same drivetrain and claimed performance figures. This means the 4,4-litre, biturbo V8 engine develops 423 kW and 750 N.m. That is a rise of 15 kW and 70 N.m over the outgoing models, and even more than the current M5 sedan.
From front to rear, both cars exude a powerful stance. This is owing to new bumpers, side sills, rear bumpers and 20-inch wheels, or optional forged 21-inch wheels.
Being an M model, there is also an app BMW has developed. Called the BMW M Laptimer app, customers can access extensive analysis of their driving style on the track. Once your smartphone is linked up to the car, the app is operated using the iDrive controller. Your speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, the gear currently engaged, steering angle and accelerator position are all recorded. You can even compare two recordings of the same track corner-by-corner.
Both will be unveiled next month at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. Expect the local introduction late in the first quarter or early in the second quarter of 2015.
