Russian investigators have exhumed the remains of the last Tsar Nicolas ll and his wife Alexandra, as part of a renewed investigation into their murders.

Together with their four daughters and son the family was killed by revolutionary Bolsheviks in 1918.

A mass grave was found in 1993 although two of the children were found in a different spot in 2007.

The remains were investigated and verified but some members of the Russian Orthodox Church are unconvinced as to the authenticity of the bones of the two separated bodies, that of the Tsar’s son Alexei and his sister Maria.

The Royal couple and three of their daughters were formally reburied at St Petersburg’s Cathedral in July 1998 on the 80 anniversary of the murder and later canonised.
