Tropical Storm Erika threatens Haiti and Dominican Republic with mud slides

Tropical Storm Erika swirling across the Caribbean on Friday threatening Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The biggest risk over the weekend is heavy rainfall which could cause flash floods and mud slides.

Twelve people have confirmed dead and several others reported missing in the small island of Dominica.

Erika was no longer forecast to make landfall in the US as a hurricane. It could still hit Miami, Florida with sustained winds with sustained winds by Sunday night.

Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency on Friday, noting the storm could travel up the spine of the state from Sunday into next week.
