Mahogany Hall Stomp - High Sierra Jazz Band 2007
A jazzfestival in Canada’s Okanagan Lake area? A perfect situation in a perfect climate by a perfect band. For many years the High Sierra Jazz Band from Three Rivers California have been friends of mine. I actually have played several jazz festivals with this band in the eighties. Now to see and hear them again at the 11th annual Pentastic Hot Jazz Festival in Penticton, BC, about 35 minute drive from where I live, was a real treat. Their rhythm group is still the original one since their beginnings in 1976. The band is now under the capable leadership of clarinetist and former Dutchman Pieter Meijers. Trombonist Howard Miyata joined the band in the late eighties and the new player is the excellent Corey Gemme on cornet.
The forever together rhythm group consists of brothers Bruce and Stan Huddleston on piano and banjo, with Charlie Castro on drums and the already 76 year old gentleman farmer Earl McKee on the sousaphone and doing many of the vocals. Sincere jazz played with high intensity. I was very glad to be able to sit in for a few tunes and been able to keep up with that energy. They have been invited back for 2008. Check out their excellent website. Their festivals, their exotic trips around the globe and more!
