Brazil: Rio Cabbies Protest Ride-Sharing Company

More than a thousand taxi drivers blocked traffic in Rio de Janeiro on Friday in a protest against what they call piracy. They are opposing the ride-sharing company Uber Technologies with complaints that drivers are improperly regulated and have very low overhead costs, making them unfairly competitive. Cabbies formed a chain stretching for 5 kilometers (3 miles) along one of the city's main avenues. After similar protests by local taxi drivers in Sao Paulo and Brasilia, lawmakers voted to ban Uber in those cities. teleSUR
