Story starts when Anand Malhotra (Akshay Kumar), son of a rich industrialist, Kailanshnath Malhotra is in love with the daughter of widowed middle class school teacher, Gayetri Saxena (Tanuja), whose name is Sapna Saxena (Karisma Kapoor). Parents of both Anand and Sapna agree to get them married. Unfortunately, on the day of the engagement, Gayetri and Sapna don't come. Kailashnath and his wife feel humiliated and swear that they will never get their son married to Sapna. Anand is shocked by this incident, and asks Gayetri the reason for her refusal, but Gayetri does not tell him anything. Anand believes that Gayatri loves him and wishes to find the reason behind this circumstances. What Anand does not know that by doing so, he could be challenging Gayetri's widowhood, as well as putting his dad and his business in jeopardy.
