Somali-based Islamist group Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the assault in Mandera town. In a statement the group’s spokesperson said “this is part of our ongoing operations against Kenya.”

The extremist militant group aims to topple Somalia’s government and impose its own version of Islamic law.

They have carried out frequent attacks in neighbouring Kenya to force Nairobi to pull its troops out of Somalia.

In the most bloody attack, they killed 148 people at a university in Kenya’s Garissa county in April.
