'Flashback Friday', this week brings to you, the history of an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960, that in a course of 8 years changed not only rock and roll, but also music for all times to come.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, came together to ultimately become the most influential faces of rock n roll culture and embodiment of ideals shared by the era's socio cultural revolutions.

On July 6, 1957, John Lennon, the leader of a band called 'Quarry Men' was introduced to Paul McCartney. Impressed by McCartney's ability to play the Guitar, John asked him to join 'Quarry Men'. Shortly after McCartney joined, he recommended George Harrison to Lennon but Lennon refused to even audition him as he thought he was too young to join them. Harrison was 14. It was on February 6, 1958, when Harrison was just 19 days short of his 15th birthday that Lennon relented and auditioned George Harrison. After playing 'Raunchy' Harrison was accepted as the newest member of the band as the lead guitarist.

They took various names such as The Johnny, The Moondogs, The Silver Beetles, The Beatals, The Silver Beatles and ultimately The Beatles .

Towards the end of 1961, Brian Epstein, whose family owned record store NEMS, began hearing about Beatles. It was during a regular performance at the Cavern Club, Liverpool, that they encountered Brian who was surprised to see their popularity. By January, 1962, Brian eventually became their official manager. Brian moulded them and gave them a look different from any other contemporary group.

It took some perseverance as they suffered hard luck with drummers in the band experimenting with Stuart Sutcliffe, Pete Best and then Andy White to finally settle with Ringo Starr. With Ringo on their side Beatles created a wave throughout Britain. They literally went on to conquer The Great Britain and it was a craze that the country had never experienced. Songs like 'Love Me Do', 'Please Please Me', 'From Me To You', 'She Loves You', I Want To Hold Your Hand' etc. created a frenzied adulation for the group that was coined as 'Beatlemania'. Beatlemania spread by 1963 to captivate and take America by storm too. On February 9, 1964 they appeared on American television 'The Ed Sullivan Show' It was later reported that there was not one reported crime in America during the time they performed!

From 1965 onwards they produced finest albums that were innovative and path breaking such as 'Rubber Soul', 'Revolver', Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', 'The Beatles' a.k.a. 'White Album' and 'Abbey Road'. They were classics and incorporated classical elements in a never before way in genres ranging from rock and roll, pop, Indian music to psychedelic and hard rock.

After their unfortunate break up in 1970, they all enjoyed successful musical careers. Lennon was shot and killed in 1980 and Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001.

Even today they are in the 'Hot 100' artists list. They have received 10 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. The Beatles is recorded in Time's '20th century's 100 most influential people'. They are the best-selling band in history with over 600 million record sold and counting.

Their break-up left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten!
