Ecuador: To Quell Protests, Correa Suspends Proposed Tax

After a week in Brussels where he attended the EU-CELAC summit, Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa returned home and immediately announced the temporary suspension of the controversial inheritance and capital gains taxes. The announcement was aimed at quelling right-wing protests, which although small in numbers had at times turned violent. To avoid further violence, Correa called for an open national debate on the proposals, currently being considered by the National Assembly. He reiterated that the proposed inheritance tax would only affect 2% of Ecuadorans. teleSUR
