Peru: Textile Workers on Strike

Textile workers in Peru have gone out on a 48-hour strike. They are protesting arbitrary firings and lay-offs by the international textile firm Topy Top, which has just dismissed 37 workers. The workers marched to the Ministry of Labor, where they held a meeting with officials in hopes of finding a solution to their demands. They want the repeal of a special law that supposedly fosters exports, but which in reality allows employers to use sub-contracts and part-time contracts with no job stability, they say. Many workers have been on part-time contracts for more than 15 years. teleSUR
