Squatter Communities Survive on Outskirts of Mexico City

Hundreds of thousands of people are living in precarious conditions in more than 1,000 squatter communities on the outskirts of Mexico City. Despite efforts at community organization, it's an uphill battle to install basic services. According to official figures, 67% of Mexico's housing stock is irregular and the country's housing deficit tops 9 million units, which would house 35 million inhabitants, a third of the nation's population. Residents of Las Compuertas in the State of Mexico adjacent to the capital tell the story of their community. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City. teleSUR
