Sixteen people were killed and nine were injured when a bus collided with a dump truck in a village in Dazhou city in China's southwestern Sichuan province on Sunday.

The bus was carrying 24 passengers, half of whom were students, Chinese media reports said. The details are not yet clear, but the dump truck, which was transporting sand and gravel, collided with the bus on a small road bridge.

The bus broke through the side barrier and landed in the riverbed below. The truck rolled on its side and spilled its cargo onto the bus, trapping several people inside it.

Of the 25 people on the bus, including the driver, 16 were killed, 11 of whom were middle school students between the ages of 12 and 16. The survivors were taken to the People's Hospital in Quxian County.

The accident took place in a village within the limits of Dazhou city. It is not yet understood what caused the accident, but reports say that an investigation is underway.

Sunday saw another deadly traffic accident in southern China when a minibus fell into a gorge in Guangxi region, killing four people and injuring eight, the Associated Press reported.

Road accidents are common in China because of poor road conditions and careless driving habits, the Associated Press also noted.

Sichuan, China's fourth most populous province, was also site of two devastating earthquakes, one in 2008 and one just last year. It was reported that nearly 70,000 people were killed in the 2008 earthquake, while 200 died in the 2013 natural disaster.
