Eight spectators, including four young children, were killed and around 80 people injured when a monster truck ploughed into the crowd at an airshow in northern Mexico on Sunday.

The three-day air show, which included performances by airplanes, monster truck acts and other acts, was called off following the accident on the second day at a park in Chihuahua, the capital of Chihuahua state.

Reuters reported that the incident, "late on Saturday afternoon took place at the El Rejon dam on the outskirts of the city, about 230 miles south of Mexico's border with the United States.

"The dead included four children, the spokesman said. Of the 79 injured, 28 are still hospitalized, with 12 in a 'delicate but stable condition,' the spokesman said.

"A video of the event, published on Youtube and local TV stations, shows a large red truck with wheels as tall as the cabin bouncing over two dummy red cars and barreling into the nearby crowd.

"The driver, who has been detained, said in a statement that he hit his head on something inside the cabin and lost consciousness, the spokesman said.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver hit his head during the second pass over the cars, causing his helmet to fly off and lose control of the vehicle.

Authorities have launched and investigation into the incident.

The governor of Chihuahua Cesar Duarte Juarez said his administration, one of the sponsors of the show, was looking into whether safety regulations had been correctly enforced . Officials didn't say if regulations had required that protective barrier for crowds were required.
