One person was killed and at least 40 others were injured after an explosion at a candy factory in Mexico.

Dulces Blueberry factory is located in an industrial park at Ciudad Juarez, a large city on the U.S. border. According to local reports, the incident happened shortly after 1 p.m., in the steam boiler room where about 150 people were working.

It is believed the blast was caused by an accumulation of gas inside one of the boilers, El Universal reported.

According to a factory worker quoted by local paper La Opinion, the area where the blast happened was used to manipulate acids and since the morning some workers had smelled acid and burnt.

He also added that a new boiler had been installed in the factory recently.

The explosion caused a wall and the ceiling of the second floor to collapse, injuring workers downstairs.

The injured were transported to local hospitals. According to Fernando Motta, head of the city's emergency services, 11 people were badly injured, four of whom were in critical condition. Thirty people were treated for minor injuries, he said, some with bone fractures and burns.
Several workers remain missing and could be trapped inside the building.

"We're still searching the area to see if there are more dead," Motta said, as Reuters reported.
Dulces Blueberry factory produces and export sweets for a company in El Paso, Texas. It employs about 300 workers.
The Ciudad Juárez-El Paso area is considered a major manufacturing center.
