Three young boys died after a fire broke out in a residential building in New York's Bronx neighborhood on Friday evening.

According to local reports, the blaze started at about 8 p.m. on the second floor of a six-story building where a mother, Tashika Turner, 25, lived with her five children.

Turner had lit candles for light after the local power company, Con Edison, shut off their power a few days earlier due to a failure to pay their bills.

The candles are believed to have started the fire, although the cause is still under investigation.
A neighbor saved the mother's two daughters, then tried to go back in to save the boys, but the flames were too high.
"I heard the kids screaming for help," said upstairs neighbor Christopher Rodriguez, 33, quoted by the New York Post. "I saw the firemen bringing out one kid. He looked like he was already dead. It was the oldest boy. His body was just black."

According to NY1, more than 100 firefighters responded to the incident.

According to police, 5-year-old Elijah Artis, 2-year-old Jeremiah Artis and 4-month-old Michael Turner were declared dead at Lincoln Hospital. Ten others were hurt, including a critically injured child.

The fire was declared under control by the fire department at around 9:15 p.m.
Con Edison couldn't immediately confirm that the power had been shut off, the New York Post reported.

Neighbors have said in interviews that the tragedy comes just days after Turner's mother, Shanka Turner, underwent heart surgery.
