Mexico castaway: How chronic dehydration damages the human body

Pacific castaway Jose Salvador Alvarenga had to delay his trip home after doctors said his health deteriorated and he showed symptoms of severe dehydration.

Alvarenga says he was adrift in the Pacific Ocean for more than a year after embarking on a fishing trip from Mexico. A fellow fisherman named Ezequiel Cordova, 23, was with him. According to Alvarenga, Cordova died four weeks after the boat went adrift, because he refused to eat raw birds and turtles.

While many question the authenticity of Alvarenga's tale, as the Mexican fisherman appeared healthy during a press conference, doctors said Alvarenga has shown symptoms that tallied with prolonged dehydration and excessive meat consumption.

Water accounts for 75 percent of a human body's mass, and long-term dehydration can cause severe damage to the body. This animation illustrates some of the effects of severe dehydration on the human body.
