At least 21 insurgents were killed in Iraq Monday (February 10) after a car bomb they were transporting accidentally detonated.

Reports say the insurgents were preparing to film a propaganda video of a suicide car attack. The insurgents departed in a convoy headed toward the Iraqi city of Samarra, but about 20 kilometers from the city, the car bomb accidentally detonated, killing at least 21 and wounding 12.

Iraqi police rushed to the scene and were able to arrest 10 militants who survived the blast.

Iraq continues to be a hotbed of violence, with over 600 civilian and 115 security forces fatalities in the month of January alone. In late 2013, however, a spike in sectarian conflict saw bloodletting reach levels not seen since the near total civil war of 2007, with 500 to 900 civilian deaths each month from May through December.

Iraqi politicians have constituted to be targets of the sectarian fueled conflict with the most recent incident involving Osama al-Nujaifi, a senior Sunni Arab Iraqi politician, targeted in an assassination attempt in the northern city of Mosul. The attempt was unsuccessful.

The region near the mainly Sunni city of Samarra has long been considered an insurgent stronghold, but areas across Iraq have also fallen under militant control, including the cities of Falluja and Ramadi which are now partially ruled by militants linked to al-Qaeda.
