One of seven Japanese women who disappeared diving in the waters near the Indonesian island of Bali remains missing after five of the other missing divers were rescued and one was found dead earlier this week.

The seven female Japanese divers went missing during a diving trip to Nusa Penida, off the coast of Bali on Friday, February 14. The dive boat's skipper who accompanied the group said he was following the divers before a sudden downpour made the water cloudy. He said he searched for the divers for more than an hour when they failed to resurface at an agreed time before reporting the incident.

One of the two local diving instructors in the group later recalled the currents crashing like "water streams in a washing machine." After drifting for some time on Friday, five of divers climbed onto some rocks and drank coconuts they found floating in the water.

On Saturday, one of the divers swam towards a passing tugboat to seek help but was swept away by the currents. After swimming for several hours, the lone diver climbed onto some rocks.

Two days later, on Monday, fishermen spotted four of the seven divers atop a rocky outcrop 20 km from their last dive site. The boatmen were unable rescue the divers due to rough waters, but the divers were later brought to shelter by a rescue boat.

The lone diver was lying on the shore, unable to move, when a rescue helicopter arrived and transported her to the hospital.

The body of one of the two missing divers has been found, while the last remaining diver is still missing.

Some 15 rescuers left Semawang beach in south Bali in three boats, while a search and rescue helicopter hovered overhead in search of the last diver.
