ILLEGAL strip search: police abuse power, strip search innocent woman

A 25-year-old Taiwanese woman, surnamed Huang, was strip searched on Sunday night in Taipei after a police officer claimed that she smelled of ketamine.

The police officer first ordered a search of their belongings, but found no sign of the drug. He then asked a female officer to give Huang a thorough body search. Huang was taken to a bathroom at a nearby convenience store, where she was asked to undress. Her bra and underwear were also searched separately while she stood there naked.

"It was humiliating," Huang said.

The Zhongzshan (中山) District police station admitted to the officer's misconduct, with the three officers involved in the incident penalized and each given a demerit point. According to Taiwanese law, a strip search can only be ordered when arrests are made.
