Okinawa pest control experts find sexual pheromone to expel harmful insects

National Agriculture Research Center for Okinawa Region and National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences announced on Thursday that they discover sexual pheromone can be effective against harmful insects.

Sugar canes are easy to cultivate in Kagoshima and Okinawa. Before harvesting, pest larvae are said to skim of the root of the sugar cane, causing serious damage to the crops in Miyakojima and Irabujima among Okinawa Prefecture.

The research team found that female adult pests discharge sexual pheromone to attract male, initiating mating behaviour. The team spreads engineered sexual pheromone through tubes in sugar cane fields to stop female adult from finding males to do their jobs. The reproductively-limited method pronounced successful. There's not much precedent for men disturbing pest's breeding by sexual pheromone around the world. The success is believed to lead to the creation and development of pest control.
