A batch of rare 19th century gold coins unearthed by a California couple last year is about to go on sale.
The couple, from Northern California, was out walking their dog on their property when they noticed something sticking out of the ground under a tree, according to SF Gate. Stopping to investigate, the couple found it was the top of an old cannister. They used a stick to dig up the can and brought it home, where they discovered it was filled with gold coins. The couple returned the site to continue digging, and found eight cannisters in total, all containing mint-condition gold coins from the 19th century.
The 1,427 coins found inside the cans dated from 1847 to 1894, according to David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which authenticated the coins. The coins were organized in chronological order, filling one can before being added to the next, and the next can after that.
The coins are in $5, $10 and $20 denominations, and added up amounts to about $27,000. However, some of the coins are so rare today experts say they could be worth nearly $1 million each. Altogether the coins are estimated to be worth at least $10 million.
SF Gate reports that although most of the coins were minted in San Francisco, one $5 gold piece came from Georgia.
