Eté 1939. Ernest, 11 ans, et Colette, 6 ans, deux petits parisiens, passent un week-end en Normandie chez leurs grands-parents. La France entre en guerre et la décision est prise de les tenir éloignés de Paris, le temps de « voir venir ». Ce séjour qui devait durer quelques semaines s’étendra sur les cinq années de la guerre, se transformant en « grandes grandes vacances »…
Réfugiés dans un monde rural qui leur est totalement étranger, Ernest et Colette vont s’ouvrir à une nouvelle vie grâce à la bande d’enfants du village, au travail à la ferme, à la découverte de la nature et des animaux. Mais ils seront également confrontés à l’occupation allemande, aux réquisitions, aux privations, à la perte d’êtres chers, au patriotisme…
Summer of 1939. Two little Parisians, Ernest, 11 years old and Colette, 6 years old, are on holiday at their grandparents’ house in Normandy. France enters the war and their parents decide to leave them in Normandy and to see how things evolve. Their stay, of what should have been a few weeks, will end up lasting for the five years of the war, turning out to be a « long, long, holiday »…
The series recounts the daily life of children during the Second World War and sheds new light on a unique historical context - families torn apart, rationing of food and other basic commodities, patriotic actions, the Occupation… but, with the adults often absent and the children often left to their own devices, our heroes will have some wonderful adventures, discovering nature, working on the farm and making new friends.
