Pro-Russian separatists shot down a Ukrainian army helicopter on Thursday, killing 14 soldiers including a National Guard general.
The Mi-8 transport helicopter was shot down during a supply mission near the eastern city of Sloviansk.
The helicopter had just delivered supplies to a checkpoint and was taking off with around a dozen troops and Major General Vladimir Kulchytsky onboard when it came under fire.
Reports said that pro-Russian separatists used a Russian made rocket propelled grenade or surface-to-air missile to down the chopper, killing 14 people including the general.
The shooting down of the helicopter came as government forces pressed ahead with an offensive to crush rebellions in the east of the country following the election of new president Petro Poroshenko on Sunday.
