Sometime in 2009 the internet cooked up a meme from of a photoshopped picture that started life simply as an entrant in a contest for making creepy edits from benign, everyday settings. This meme is known as Slenderman.
However, just last Saturday the 'legend' of Slenderman drove two 12 year old girls to try and kill their classmate by stabbing her 19 times.
But just where did this Slenderman thing come from anyway?
Just like an old fashioned ghost story told over and over but with a 21st century slant, Slenderman started off as a short story in a small corner of the internet, in the community forum of a comedy website, Something Awful.
Over the years the tale got taller, the stories more twisted, and the delivery media more sophisticated, including short films and video games. From there it basically took the tack of anything viral on the internet, and the legend surrounding it is larger than the actual reality.
So the real story is that it's a myth of a myth -- intended as a hoax from the start, fueled by us humans' fear of the unknown. It's only when younger minds who don't have the capacity to discern real from fantasy become involved that the meme becomes dangerous.
