After spending almost two decades with a terrible secret, on Monday June 9, Matthew Gibson decided to confess to the murder of a woman in Arizona in 1997.
Gibson then drove from North Carolina to Arizona, an over 2000 mile journey that takes at least 30 hours.
He'd intended to drive to Bullhead City, but shortly after crossing into Arizona from New Mexico, he must have decided it was now or never.
Gibson walked into a police station in the small Arizona town of Winslow and told surprised officers he was a killer.
Gibson told cops he killed Barbara Brown during a fight and provided enough details that police say they believe he is telling the truth.
Brown's body was found in a park near the Colorado River in 1997. An autopsy determined she died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Gibson's confession brings a close to one of Bullhead City's oldest and coldest cases, a killing that baffled police for 17 years.
