She had been sentenced to death for marrying a Christian and refusing to convert back to Islam. Now free, Sudanese mother Meriam Ibrahim told CNN of her inhuman treatment in prison.

Though Ibrahim was pregnant, prison officials refused to allow her to go to hospital. She was forced to give birth behind bars with her legs chained.

During labor, she couldn't open her legs. Prison guards had to lift her off the table.

Although Ibrahim and her new-born girl are now safe, she is worried her daughter might never walk properly due to the abnormal labor.

The day after her release, officials detained Ibrahim, her husband and her child at the Khartoum airport, accusing them of using forged travel documents.

Ibrahim said: "It's my right to use the papers. I have a South Sudanese passport because my husband is a South Sudanese citizen. I never forged any papers. I was given the papers by the South Sudanese embassy because I deserve it. It's my right to have papers like these because my husband is South Sudanese."

Ibrahim told CNN she is currently in a safe place.

US officials are now negotiating with Sudanese authorities to secure family safe passage out of the country.
