An unsettling one-and-a-half minute video showing a Chinese man commit suicide by bus in the northern port city of Tianjin has gone viral in China and beyond.
The video, first posted on June 24, shows the man first throwing his bag on to the street. Witnesses say it appeared as though he was waiting for something. Moments later, as Bus 863 headed toward him, he stepped forward calmly and deliberately. He then shot forward, sliding slid himself under the bus between its front and rear wheels, just in time for the heavy back end of the vehicle to crush his neck as it passed over him. People nearby can be heard screaming.
But what's perhaps more horrifying than the suicide is the reaction of those at the scene.
The video displays an alarming detachment; people pass without a soul bothering to check on the man the man or call police. Several just stand there talking about the accident. We can hear one man asking another whether he got the dead on video. One observer even asked a woman blocking the camera to stop obstructing the view.
Many web users commenting on the video expressed the belief that the man appeared to be about to stage a fake car accident to extort money from drivers — as such acts to screw people out of cash are all too common in China.
Yet, we wonder why no-one reacted to the man behaving strangely or thought to stop traffic from driving near his dead body.
