Burning man death: Man commits suicide by running into bonfire at Utah spin-off festival

A man is dead after he hurled himself into a bonfire at a Burning Man spin-off festival in Utah on Saturday night, authorities report.

In an apparent suicide, 30-year-old Christopher Wallace of Salt Lake City dove into a 30-foot fire while hundreds looked on at the arts festival near Grantsville.

Hundreds of festival goers watched on Saturday night as event staff burned a three-story structure in the shape of a character from the book, "Where the Wild Things Are."

The fire had been burning for around 30-minutes when Wallace breached security, dancing closer and closer to the flames witnesses said.

Event staff and firefighters who were working security ordered Wallace to stop, but instead he sprinted toward the flames leaping in, witnesses told local media. Video footage posted on Youtube shows Wallace breaking away from event staff and diving into the fire.

"It's like he didn't even know it was fire, it's like he thought it was just a playground," one witness told local media.

Event organizers said they plan to examine policies to prevent an incident like this from happening in the future.
