Caught on camera: hero Cleveland cop resuscitates drowning toddler

A 2-year-old boy was saved from drowning by Cleveland police officer Ismael Quintana on June 17th. The entire rescue effort was captured on his body camera.

The accident occurred while the boy's aunt, Cynthia Conner, was talking to another policeman about a fence damaged by a car. At the time, two-year-old Drances was playing with other kids but sneaked off when no one was looking. Drances got into the backyard paddling pool without his floaties on.

A relative found Drances unconscious and called for help. The policeman on the scene called for backup.

"He was purple. He was lifeless," Cynthia Conner told Fox8 News. "When they picked him up -- he had no, nothing. He was, like shaking; his lips were shaking. It's something I'm never gonna forget, like, sometimes I just wake up thinking about it."

Officer Quintana had originally considered not taking the call because he was some distance away, but he decided to go anyway.

When he arrived, Drances was unconscious on the driveway. He turned on his chest camera and ordered the aunt to do mouth-to-mouth while he did the compression. Moments later, EMTs also arrived at the scene.

Drances regained consciousness and was able to breathe on his own. He left the hospital after a few days and is showing no apparent side effects from the near drowning.

Officer Quintana has been nominated for an award for his heroic actions. He will likely receive a distinguished service medal.
