Giant Rubber Duck made by Florentijn Hofman flushed away by storm in China
Seems that Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman's giant rubber duck is on a streak of bad luck in Asia.
While being on display In Taiwan last year, the 54-foot tall giant plastic fowl got dirty, got deflated, and bursted on New Year's Eve. Now touring across the strait, Ducky had just flat out disappeared.
According to reports, the gigantic artwork had been on display in southern China in Guizhou City since July 4. However, last Wednesday at around 7PM, a heavy storm swept the city, and dislodged the 10-ton metal platform, which was fastened to the riverbed by steel wires underneath the rubber bird.
Exhibition coordinator Yan Jianxin told Wall Street Journal's China Real Time blog, "The duck flopped over and was flushed away really quickly by the torrential flood." Adding, "It disappeared right in front of me."
Authorities have launched a duck hunt in an attempt to recover the yellow rubber duck, offering the finder a handsome reward. However, the exhibition organizers have also confirmed that if the lost bird cannot be found, they will order a replacement from an authorized manufacturer in Taiwan.
