Subway near-miss: Baby girl and mother rescued from tracks by Good Samaritan subway cleaner

A 2-year-old child rolled onto the subway tracks in Queens Monday and survived thanks to her mother and a subway cleaner who helped them both up before a train arrived.

The girl was in a stroller when it rolled back onto the track of the eastbound E train, at the Jamaica Center-Parsons Boulevard and Archer Avenue stop in Jamaica, Queens around 11.15 a.m., Monday. The 39-year-old mother had gone to throw something into the garbage can.

As the mother jumped down to rescue her daughter, she sprained her ankle. That's when a subway cleaner, who only identified herself as Diane, jumped down onto the tracks to help. Fortunately, no train was coming at the time.

Other Good Samaritans also helped out. An official with the Transit Workers' Union said Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers took steps to stop the next train, using flashlights.

"And they stopped the train operator while he was proceeding into Parsons and Archer," said union vice president Nelson Rivera.

The mother suffered a sprained ankle and was taken to North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center. The girl was also taken to the same hospital after suffering cuts to the face. Both were reported to be in a stable condition.
