U.S. Navy accuses Chinese jet of 'reckless' moves near American patrol plane

The United States military is condemning the Chinese Air Force for what it termed ‘reckless’ actions by a Chinese fighter jet on August 19.

The U.S. Navy says a Chinese Su-27 fighter plane was involved in an incident with a U.S. plane on Tuesday during which, the U.S. Navy alleges the Chinese jet approached a U.S. P-8 Poseidon patrol plane.

The U.S. says the jet ignored established air safety standards and at one point, got within 10 meters of the U.S. plane.

The incident took place on August 19th, near China’s southern island of Hainan, but the U.S. says its plane was in international airspace at the time.

The U.S. also accused the Chinese jet of performing dangerous maneuvers, including flying above and under the U.S. plane as well as performing a barrel roll near the U.S. plane.

In late 2013, China announced the creation of an Air Defense Identification Zone, demanding all planes flying through it inform China first. Many nations--including the U.S.--have ignored China’s demands.

China issued a blanket denial of the U.S. accusations over the weekend, saying its pilot was ‘professional’ and ‘maintained a safe distance’ at all times as it ‘inspected’ the U.S. plane.
