‘Cops’ tragedy: TV show crew member accidentally shot to death by Omaha police in shootout

A ‘Cops’ TV show crew member Bryce Dion, 38, an audio technician for the long-running show, was accidentally shot to death by police while filming officers responding to an armed robbery in Omaha.

The incident occurred as police were responding to an armed robbery at a Wendy’s restaurant near 43rd and Dodge Streets in Omaha, Nebraska at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

As three officers and the two members of the ‘Cops’ crew arrived at the scene, the suspect, 22-year-old Cortez Washington, opened fire.

Officers returned fire and struck Washington, while Dion was also hit by one of the police rounds. The bullet struck Dion beneath his armpit, in an area unprotected by his bulletproof vest.

Washington fled the building before he collapsed in the restaurant’s parking lot. Both Dion and Washington died later from their injuries.

Police later determined that Washington was carrying an airsoft pistol with plastic pallet bullets.

The three officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave while an investigation takes place.
