Transgender teen Chase Culpepper banned from wearing makeup in license photo
  • 9 years ago
Chase Culpepper is a 16-year-old resident of South Carolina who was born male.

But for a while now, Chase has worn women’s clothes and makeup and doesn’t self-identify as either ‘male’ or ‘female’.

Chase normally looks like a woman in his/her daily life, but when Chase went in for a driver’s license in South Carolina, Chase was told to remove his/her make-up as the local DMV said it constituted a ‘disguise.’

In the end, Chase complied with the South Carolina DMV’s demand, but advocates for transgendered people were highly displeased and the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund has now filed a lawsuit on the 16-year-olds’ behalf, alleging Chase’s civil rights were violated.

What do you think? Does the South Carolina DMV have the right to say who gets to wear make-up? What if a woman had grown a real-life moustache? Should she have to shave it for a driver’s license photo?

Darn, this world is getting complicated.
