Mountain lion attacks 6-yo boy in Silicon Valley while walking with family

A 6-year-old Californian boy is lucky to be alive after a mountain lion attacked him in broad daylight while he and his parents were walking a popular trail on Sunday afternoon.

The rare and provoked attack occurred just after 1 p.m. about two miles from the Picchetti Winery on Montebello Road in Cupertino.

The boy's family said he was walking about 15 feet ahead of the group when the animal lunged from behind and locked its jaws around his neck.

His parents and a number of other adults watched mountain lion then drag the child into a brush area beside the trail. They put up a fight and managed to beat the animal away. The boy was alive but bleeding heavily from the neck and back.

He was rushed to hospital for treatment. On Sunday night his condition was upgraded to fair.

Some 20 police, park rangers and Department of Fish and Wildlife officials have began a search for the mountain lion which has since been suspended. The trail was closed to the public immediately after the attack.

If found, the animal will be killed and tested for rabies.
