Kraken found? Giant colossal squid dissected by New Zealand scientists at Te Papa museum

New Zealand scientists dissected one of the largest squids ever found on Tuesday in a live webcast by scientists at Te Papa museum in Wellington that has been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

Led by Kat Bolstad of Auckland University of Technology, a research team dissected the 350 kilogram colossal squid that was captured approximately 1.6 km beneath the surface in Antarctica’s remote Ross Sea by a New Zealand fishing vessel.

The dissected squid measures 3.5 metres in length. Each of its eight arms are about 1 metre long. Its tentacles were damaged during capture, but both are believed to have been 2 metres long. Its intact eye balls are the size of dinner plates.

The squid was found to have three hearts, one that pumps blood to the body and two that help power its gills.

Scientists obtain most colossal squid specimens from patagonian toothfish lines or in the guts of their predators, the sperm whale.

The colossal squid is more massive but not as long as it cousin, the giant squid. Giant squids are believed to weigh as much as 275 kilograms, while colossal squids may weigh up to one tonne.
