Texas college softball bus crash leaves 4 dead in Oklahoma

The driver of a semi truck that collided with a bus and killed four Texas community college softball players late Friday told authorities he was reaching for a drink in the cabin of his truck when the collision occurred.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash. Oklahoma Highway Patrol Captain Ronnie Hampton said that even though the driver said he was distracted, authorities are “by no means” saying a distraction caused the crash, which injured another dozen people.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Russell Staley, suffered only minor injuries after his truck crossed into oncoming traffic on Interstate 35 outside Davis, Oklahoma. He was treated and released at a nearby hospital.

Three of the softball players died at the scene, while the fourth passed away at an Oklahoma hospital. The were identified as Katelynn Woodlee, 18, Meagan Richardson, 18, Brooke Deckard, 20, and Jaiden Pelton, 20.

Authorities say the truck hit the bus after it missed a right-hand curve on northbound I-35 and veered 820 feet straight across a grassy median, then continued off the highway for about another 300 feet after the collision before it crashed into a tree.

The truck apparently hit the bus, with 15 players aboard, just behind the driver’s seat, shearing off metal from the cab to the back bumper while smashing windows and popping open the back emergency door.

Police say the semi kept going and ran off the highway, traveling some distance from the bus.

Authorities are testing both the truck driver and the coach driving the bus for drugs and alcohol.
