Jerusalem violence: Palestinian kills policeman, injures 13 with van

A motorist rammed into pedestrians on a crowded Jerusalem street and then got out of his vehicle to attack people with a metal bar on Wednesday in what Israeli police, who shot him dead, said appeared to be a deliberate Palestinian attack.

Around noon Wednesday in the primarily ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Shmuel Hanavi, a man later identified as Ibrahim Akari of East Jerusalem was driving a white van when he deliberately turned into a space reserved for a light rail station and hit three Border Policemen along with a fourth person.

Akari then sped out of that area and down Shimon Hatzadik road and struck at least ten others at its intersection with Moshe Sachs road. He then hopped out of the van and began hitting bystanders with a crowbar before being shot dead by arriving police.

No motive for the van attack was immediately released, but Hamas backed it in a text message to the news media: "Hamas blesses the action. What is happening in Jerusalem is pushing us to prepare for war." Medical officials said one of the victims later died in hospital and about a dozen more were injured
