A new web game is giving music enthusiasts a chance to prove their taste. The Song Market, currently in its public beta stage, is an online fusion of trend predictions and stock market tactics.

“At this point, it’s basically bragging rights,” said Mackinley Smith, 22, chief operations officer of The Song Market. “We wanted to provide a platform where basically you could go and show off how good you are at predicting music trends.”

Users can browse or request any song available on Spotify to be included in the music marketplace on The Song Market. The idea is to search for songs that are going to be popular in the near future.

“We start everyone off with a gift of $300 credit,” Smith says. That’s $300 simulated currency -- not real money. Users can purchase as many “shares” of a particular song as their credit allows. They can then sell those shares back when it seems they’re at their peak.

The crowd feature allows users to invite their friends to compete to see who can best predict the success of songs.

Smith says his team hopes to roll out the final public version of the website in the coming weeks and months.
