Police shooting of black man with knife Thaddeus McCarroll near Fergusson sparks protests

An African American man armed with a knife was killed by St. Louis County police in front of his home on Friday evening, sparking renewed protests against excessive force by police officers.

Charlene McCarroll called St. Louis County police to her home in Jennings on Friday night, after her 23-year-old son, Thaddeus, locked her out of the house.

Police attempted to negotiate with Thaddeus from 9:20 p.m. until after 11 p.m. Thaddeus could be seen through the front window holding a samurai-style sword and a knife, and responded angrily to police questions.

After 11 p.m., Thaddeus ran out of his home armed with a knife in one hand, and holding a bible in the other. A tactical officer shot Thaddeus with a rubber bullet, then five seconds later another sprayed him with bullets from a fully automatic weapon, killing him.

At a press conference, St. Louis County chief of police Jon Belmar said officers had no other option but to shoot.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Charlene McCarroll told police her son had been wandering the house, talking irrationally about having a "mission" and going on a "journey". He also mentioned a "black revolution" before locking his mother out of the house.

Police told Charlene McCarroll they would talk her son out of the house and then take him to DePaul Hospital, a mental health facility. She remained on the scene and was present when police shot her son.

On Saturday, about 50 protesters gathered near a police substation in Jennings to protest the shooting.
