Islamic State launched a car bomb attack near the U.S. consulate in Erbil, Iraq on Friday, killing at least three people.

The attack began after a small improvised bomb exploded in the area. A car packed with explosives then moved towards the consulate but was stopped by consulate security personnel who opened fire at the car, CNN reported.

The car exploded before reaching the consulate. It was reportedly detonated by people inside the car, according to CNN.

A witness told Reuters that a gunbattle between the attackers and police ensued after the blast. Officials said three people were killed and 14 were wounded.

The U.S. State Department said no U.S. personnel were hurt in the blast, according to Reuters.
