Plane hacking: Security expert Chris Roberts grounded from United flights after tweet

Chris Roberts, a top airplane computer systems security expert has been banned from flying on United Airlines flights after posting a tweet mid-flight that made it seem to FBI officials that he was trying to deploy the plane's oxygen masks by hacking into its computer via the on-board wifi.

He was only joking, but as we all know, the Feds have no sense of humor about these matters. Agents greeted him at the next airport totally unamused.

Roberts has publicly admonished Airbus and Boeing about the lack of security between the in-flight wifi and entertainment systems and critical flight systems. He believes a very skilled hacker could appear to be a passenger getting work done, but in reality hacking into a jet's flight management systems, while keeping alarms for such things silenced.

He ultimately made it to his destination aboard a Southwest Airlines jet, but still believes the airlines and aircraft makers should heed his warnings before a hypothetical disaster such as the one outlined, becomes a reality.
