Yemen crisis: U.S. beefs up naval presence in the Arabian Sea after arms embargo vote

The United States sent the aircraft carrier the USS Theodore Roosevelt along with a guided-missile cruiser, the USS Normandy, into Yemen’s surrounding waters on Sunday.

The Roosevelt and the Normandy left the Persian Gulf for the Arabian Sea over the weekend, and join seven other U.S. warships near the Gulf of Aden. According to Reuters, U.S. naval presence in the region includes both cruisers and destroyers, along with amphibious ships.

A U.N. Security Council resolution that recently passed in a 14-0 vote with Russia abstaining imposes an arms embargo on Iranian-backed Shiite Houthi rebels. The U.S. warships were dispatched as U.S. officials closely monitor a convoy of seven Iranian ships believed to be headed toward Yemen with unidentifiable cargo. However, the U.S. Navy officials deny that the warships are there to block Iranian weapons shipments to Yemen.

As conflict escalates in Yemen and threaten neighboring countries loyal to the United States, the U.S. has positioned ships near Yemen in a move that it says ‘gives American decision-makers options’ in the event the current situation deteriorates further.
