US Energy Secretary: Washington 'committed to a low-carbon economy'

US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has become one of the most high-profile members of Barack Obama's cabinet since his confirmation in May 2013. Moniz's background as a nuclear physicist has thrust him into a key role in the Iran nuclear talks. He spoke to FRANCE 24's Douglas Herbert during his latest trip to Paris, where he met French officials to talk about energy security and prepare for a major climate conference in the French capital later this year.
Ernest Moniz insists that the US is committed "to a low-carbon economy". He says his ultimate goal is to cut carbon emissions by an ambitious 80%.
The US Energy Secretary believes that the economic benefits of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, “have been enormous” and says that the economic impacts of the technique are “challenging” but “manageable”.
He sees natural gas as "a bridge to a very low-carbon future”, with new technologies such as carbon capture playing a growing role in reducing emissions.
He also urged Europe to diversify its energy supply in order to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.
